ON THE FAVES SHELF | howl’s moving castle by dianna wynne jones

“go to bed, you fool,” calcifer said sleepily. “you’re drunk.” “who, me?” said howl. “i assure you, my friends, i am cone sold stober.” he got up and stalked upstairs, feeling for the wall as if he thought it might escape him unless he kept in touch with it. his bedroom door did escape him.

Martha Graham on the Life-Force of Creativity and the Divine Dissatisfaction of Being an Artist.

Wow.

She’s totally right about the channel, though!  Not your job to judge it (that’s my RL job. :D)  Your job to keep it the hell open!!!

That must be from Agnes de Mille’s autobiography! I need to get a hold of that and read it. Both were such fascinating creative beings, her and Martha, so distinctive and so iconic!

I love this and just insisted, despite feeble protests (I WILL NOT LISTEN! I NEVER LISTEN) on reading it aloud to everyone at the writing retreat I am on. Holly (Black) often says that you do not have to believe in yourself, just do it, and it is lovely to me to think of two ladies decades ago talking about creativity, in the same way my friends and I do, coming to the same conclusions and having them regarded as important. And it is personally a good time for me to hear it. In all the history of all the universe, nobody else is ever going to be you, or able to tell your stories. And your stories might matter to somebody. You don’t have to believe. You just have to tell the stories.
