it’s john’s blood through which
michael’s vesselic capacity travels through, right? which means that the
biological ability to contain lucifer is passed down through mary
there are clearly alternative
explanations–i mean, off the top of my head, i can imagine that at the
fall lucifer’s vesselic lineage was wiped off the face of the earth, so for him
to be able to inhabit a human body the requirements were a vessel of michael’s
lineage and demon blood (sam is basically a tainted backup michael vessel in this
scenario, which i think is hilarious)
or maybe azazel’s special children are all from vessel lines, say the hundred strongest (hence why the novaks
don’t have a special child in the family; i doubt castiel would’ve cracked the
list), and any of them would’ve worked as a true vessel, but of course it
turned out to be sam, of course
but honestly i like the lucifer’s-line-is-the-campbells the best because there’s something enchanting
about contrasting the idea of michael’s line being passed down through the
patriarchal winchester clan, versus lucifer’s line being passed down through
the matriarchal campbell descent, from deanna to mary (obviously i found the conjecture
that lucifer is closer to female than male compelling). and because i think this version of mary’s decisions pays appropriate homage to her role in the winchester curse. john’s life left a greater mark in the personalities of dean and sam, given he had 20+ years to mary’s four/zero, but mary’s decisions are the ones that spiral outward, on and on, brushing against heaven and hell alike.
it doesn’t matter that john made a demon deal if he didn’t break. but mary’s deal matters. john’s deal, dean’s deal; those are pieces falling into place. mary’s deal creates the board.
I really like this idea and it’s not the first time Lucifer has been associated with the feminine. Others have written meta before about how Lucifer was introduced in season 5 – he appeared to Nick in form of his dead wife and to Sam in form of Jess, his dead girlfriend. Both were wearing white nightgowns, just the way Mary did the night she died. Nick’s wife is linked to Mary by her status not only as a wife but as a mother as well. The parallels between Mary and Jess had been obvious right from the start – not only do they look alike (white nightgown, blonde hair), they died the same way. Both had been romanticaly involved with a Winchester. Both men blame themselves for those deaths and are in some ways the reason those women died. Mary made the deal with Azazel to save John, Jess had to die so Sam would return to the hunting life. White as a colour symbolizes innocence and purity – in 5×04 Lucifer wears a white suit. White of course is a bright colour, the brightest colour that exists actually and a colour we associate with light – Lucifer’s name means lightbringer.
Ironically within the show it has been stated more than once that Sam – Lucifer’s vessel – acts a lot like John/comes after him, whereas Dean – Micheal’s vessel – comes more after his mother and is very often associated with the feminine.
*nods* they tend to act as the subversion at the end of the line while all the other parallels all the way back are played straight.
I read a great meta which I know I reblogged but I’m tired to find right now that basically said how with the parallels stretching from God and Amara right down to Sam and Dean where they’re suddenly, finally flipped after all the previous iterations, it’s like the universe has been trying to tell the story “right” which is how we get to a universe where Dean is doomed a billion times over to always have to kill Sam because that’s the pattern of the universe, but they’re the subversion to the story so he never can.
(I quite like it for the way I enjoy reading the show’s universe as radiating outwards from Sam and Dean backwards – taking all the retcons and developed backstory not as new info on the universe that’s existed all the time, but an understanding of the universe that grows around them – I have an ongoing “Dean is the centre of the universe” theory and it’s like mostly only feasible because of how freaking meta the show is :P)
having finally watched the star trek beyond trailer i have concluded that rather than hating fun and also ourselves we should all focus on the following excellent list of positives
isn’t star trek into darkness
quality spones bickering
that one moment where karl urban turns around and literally morphs into deforest kelley via a glitch in spacetime
SCOTTY!!!!
isn’t star trek into darkness
chris pine clearly having the time of his life being captain kirk, which is appropriate as james t. kirk is also having the time of his life being captain kirk
MAN i love anything and everything gothic americana like think about southwestern gothic with flickering motel lights and thieves and snakes hiding in sunset deserts, but also new england gothic with deep dark woods and bodies sunk into the bottom of freezing lakes, and appalachian gothic with dirty-feet tangle-haired children and small crumbling houses and the wind whistling eerily, and even midwest gothic with lonely tractors rusting away in the sunlight and endless plains and plains of vast nothingness as far as the eye can see, florida gothic (old bones sunk into the swamp), wisconsin gothic (the town’s been snowed in for weeks now, who knows what’s happening up there), california gothic (they don’t call ‘em ghost towns for nothing), colorado gothic (something’s living up in those mountains and it only comes out at night) and of course southern gothic to rule them all, a landscape of witchery, poverty, hellfire and damnation
